I first started hearing about SPLORE when I was very young. Martha Ham was one of my mentors on a women’s river trip that I take with about 20 women per year. She has taught me so much about myself, what I would like to do, and how I began volunteering with SPLORE when I turned 16. I was so excited when came of the proper age to volunteer.
My first experience was with the program ROCK ON! a program working with kids with all aspects of the autism spectrum who want to rock climb. The first young man I worked with wasn’t able

to communicate very well with me, I was nervous at first, but we came to have a communication all our own that we didn’t actually need to speak with each other. Over those eight weeks, I watched this young man go from climbing 5.4 and 5.5s to climbing 5.9 and 5.10. I was amazed at the amount of energy these children and young adults have.

This past summer I volunteered down on the Southern programs. I attended the training trip where I met a whole slew of people who were interested in working with SPLORE. I then proceeded to spend a week doing trips with the organization on the Colorado Daily in Moab.

I loved being able to hear young adults’ stories of how they got to where they were, I loved getting to know the other volunteers, and above all, I loved being able to be outside doing things that I loved with other people who loved it too.
